Understanding Possums
Possums are highly adaptable native Australian marsupials. As urban areas have expanded, possums have learned to utilize roof cavities as safe, warm alternatives to tree hollows.
Brush-Tailed Possums
The most common possum found in Sydney roofs. They are larger, highly vocal (often making loud screeching or grunting noises), and very territorial.
Ringtail Possums
Smaller and quieter, Ringtails usually build nests (dreys) in dense foliage but will occasionally move into roof spaces. They are social and often live in family groups.
Wildlife Laws & Protection
All possums are protected native animals under the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Act 1974. It is illegal to kill, harm, or relocate them without a license. Possums must be released on the same property they were caught on, within 150 metres of the capture site.
Why Do They Enter Roofs?
